Photo Hunting Time

A few days ago, I joined with Batam Photo Club to hunting a photo.. the theme is glamour model.. sounds good. So, we all should gather at 3pm which is not so good because you know, indonesian always late.. and it's an outdoor. Just a while before night comes.. It's the first time ever in any photo club in indonesia or even worldwide (trying to dramatize it.. hehehe..) that a photo hunting involved more models rather than the photographers.. usually there's one model for 6-7 photographers which a standard number.. but in this case there's too much models which is really really good so you have more option. and did I mention that it's free too? Usually for this kind hunting you have to pay about 150,000 rupiah / approx US$ 15. And there's about 14 models for 14 photographers. but only two that become my favourite, Imel and Rara.. and for more pics visit my deviantart..

Barelang Bridge

Yesterday, Oct 1st, I visited Barelang Bridge. The most famous bridge in Batam, well.. there's only one bridge in here, so of course it's famous.. the length maybe 2,5 km.. and it's a good place to hangout.. because you can sit on the side of bridge, wind slowly blowing on your face, meanwhile you can get popcorn and watch dolphin swimming around (kidding.. nobody sells popcorn and it's too good to be true if there's a dolphin..), but just be careful, if you slipped away, you'll falling from the bridge to the sea and that about 30 metres. You can get killed.

Hotspot Paradise

I don't know why Jakarta as the capital city of Indonesia which is the most sophisticated, most rich, etc but really hard to find a hotspot? Nadine Chandradinata, former of Puteri Indonesia also complain about this one. Hotspot only available is few restorant at mall. More luxurious, shiny, blink blink, giant supermall like Grand Indonesia or Senayan City, more harder to find hotspot, all you can see just expensive clothes and food, nothing else. For this hotspot thing, Bandung more better than Jakarta. There's one medium size mall, not to luxurious, but that entire building is a hotspot. Can u imagine that? Absolute freedom. You don't have to buy drink/food in restorant, just sit in foodcourt and don't have to buy anything.

And how about batam? Yeah, this is a small island but only 20 kilometres from Singapore, and second most visited place in Indonesia after Bali, all mall in here are a small mall, same like in Bandung. No blink blink, no luxurious. Just an ordinary mall. but it's really easy to find hotspot. And not only in a mall, there's two hotspot park in here. In Engku Putri park and in Panbil park, and there's five places like this now in construction. Almost everyday until 4am, I hang out in Engku Putri park and if the connection is good the real speed is about 120kbps, I downloaded many content using approx 5 different software, all at the same time. It's really fun. But I concern about my health because it's not good to sleep at 4-5 am everyday.

Hunting in GG executive club Batam

Two days ago, I go to GG executive club in Nagoya Plasa Hotel, Batam with my friends from local newspaper and Batam Photo Club. I should pay Rp. 160,000 (US$16), but luckily the GM in that hotel is my tourism lecturer so i can go inside for free. And There's music performance by Ikaputri, new talented singer. And the MC are Cynthiara Alona and natalie Foxy.

Jakarta vs Batam

It's been 4 months I stayed in Batam. Many people keep asking me which is better; Jakarta or Batam? Hm.. hard to say.. so I do some research, I asked uncle Google, and uncle Yahoo too. Unfornutely, not like usual, for this case they give me nothing.. So, I wait for 4 months, and here what I can say based on experience.

01. Jakarta is a heaven for bookholic like me. Twice a week, I go to Gramedia in Mega Mall, Taman Angrek Mall, Citraland, and always found new interisting books. Sometimes, I go to Gramedia Matraman, which is a 4-story building with many sofa to read a book, newspaper and magazine for free in a relaxing enviroment. For english book, I go to Kinokuniya bookstore, and Aksara bookstore in Plaza Senayan, and Grand Indonesia. And I'm so curious about Gramedia in Grand Indonesia that just opened. It's the bestest bookstore in Indonesia, as they said it on ads.

In Batam? the biggest mall in here, Nagoya Hill Superblock, no gramedia, bookstore that available is karisma. And what kind of book that they have? nothing. No new book. they only have book that printed about 10,20 or even 100 years ago!!! (that 100 years just kidding..). So boring. Then I go to gramedia in here. Not bad. Like gramedia in Citraland, Jakarta but smaller, with a lot of not updated books. And there's no english book, seat or sofa in any bookstore in Batam. what a mistake! I can't enjoy good old day where I can reading for free in relax.

02. Jakarta is a heaven for foodlovers. Over a millions cafe and hang out places in Jakarta with great interior wating for you. In batam? ops.. No great interior, no extremely delicious food, all just ordinary but expensive food. For example, there's no hoka hoka bento here. But there's one restoran like hoka hoka bento named takeshi bento. With same price, but less delicious and less portion. Food price are so high in Batam, higher than in muara karang, Jakarta, which is Medan people lived here and I thought they crazy sell food really expensive, and now I realize, Batam people are more crazy.

03. You like to drive a car? Batam is a heaven for you. No traffic jam in here. All destination you like to go are predictable. If it's take 15 minutes, you'll arrived on time or earlier, if you came to work or school too late and you said, ow.. there's traffic jam in here, there, and there. That's extremely nonsense bullshit..

And most of people in Batam drive a sedan with model that you never seen before in Jakarta. Because it's all car from Singapore. This car is cheap because they can't go outside Batam island. And now, Batam just a few weeks ahead to Free Trade Zone. Which is no taxes for things like otomotif, cigarettes, alcohol drink, etc. This gonna make that second-handed singaporean car getting more cheaper and cheaper.

04. There's a lot of sexy women in Batam. A LOT!!!!! In Jakarta, many beautiful women, we know that. But Nobody dare enough to wears a sexy dress in public area like mall or street(I'm not talking about clubbing place,etc). But in here, Batam.. wow!!!! mini skirt, or extremely mini skirt is a common thing (which is you can see ehem ehem when she is sitting). And girls in here really like wear mini skirt. Maybe next time i should take some photos and share with u all.. But.. After considering the fact that I may get slap,so forget it. In Jakarta, you see beautiful women, in most cases, she have a date with average or good looking guys like me. But in Batam, all beautiful and sexy women dated with ugly men.. not average.. UGLLYYY!!!! Life is so unfair, and I think I now should get used to it.

05. Singapore just about 30 minutes from Batam. And with that 30 minutes, guess where I can go from my home in muara karang, Jakarta??? Well, the most farest destination i can go is Mega mall in pluit which is 500 metres from my home. Are you serious traffic jam in Jakarta so bad like that, Bobby? No, just kidding.. hehehe.. But 30 minutes take you nowhere in Jakarta.

06. No bajaj, no metromini, no that kind polluted stuff in Batam. Enjoy a clean air. I'm tired with oxygen masker that I must wear whenever I go to somewhere in Jakarta, but goodbye for that stuff. Serious? kidding again, but air in Jakarta is extremely polluted. Just look at Jakarta sky, can u see a clean blue sky? sometimes, if you lucky enough. But it's always clean blue in here.

However, as what they said, you don't what u have until u lost it. I now realize that I have many great friends in Jakarta, my friends in batam is good. I love them too. But friends in Jakarta are the only reason why I want to "pulang kampung" (come back to home) so bad. I love you all of my friends in Jakarta. Hope see u soon!

Understanding and Managing the Stress Response

Imagine for a moment that you are living in the Stone Age, some 10,000 years ago. Your day largely consists of gathering food for you and your family to eat. Life is stressful, but you have no complaints. Your priorities are clear, you know how to survive, and you take pride in your ability to handle whatever comes your way.

The Stress Response
Now imagine that it is dusk and you and some companions are returning from a long, exhausting day of hunting. You suddenly encounter a small pack of startled wolves, obviously threatened by your presence. A violent confrontation is imminent. As if turned on by an unseen switch, you instinctively set in motion a torrent of physiologic, emotional, and behavioral reactions designed to maximize your chances of survival. This is the stress response.
To survive in the face of this stressor, you will need to see clearly (even at dusk), think coherently, move rapidly, and cooperate with your allies. This requires a sharp increase in blood flow and oxygen supply to your brain, special senses, and skeletal muscles. Your heart rate increases, your blood pressure rises, your breathing quickens, your airways widen.
Blood is diverted away from non-essential organs such as your skin, which becomes cool and clammy. Your pupils dilate and, in case you're injured in an ensuing battle, your immune system is suppressed to dampen the painful consequences of inflammation. Two stress hormones, produced in large part by the adrenal glands, primarily orchestrate these physiologic changes: epinephrine (or adrenalin) and cortisol.
You and your companions know exactly what to do. You coordinate your positions, raise your weapons, and prepare for a fight. Fortunately, the wolves retreat. As the danger subsides, so does the stress response, which is highly adaptable to a rapidly changing environment. As quickly as it turns on, it turns off once the threat has passed. You proceed home, a little shaken, but otherwise feeling fine as your epinephrine and cortisol levels return to normal.

Stone-agers in the 21st Century
Now imagine it is present day. Your day largely consists of making money so you and your family have food to eat. It is dusk and you're getting ready to return home from a long, exhausting day at work. On your way out, your hostile boss inappropriately accuses you of a mistake you did not commit, and insists that you immediately correct the problem. While not imminently life-threatening, this blow to your integrity is enough to ignite a typical stress response, the physiology of which has not changed since the Stone Age. Wild animals no longer pose the threat. Supervisors, deadlines, responsibilities, and social injustices have replaced them.
So, what do you do?
Argue with your boss or quit your job to escape his threatening behavior? On the contrary. Feeling trapped by societies expectations, you respond, through clenched teeth, "I'm sorry. I'll take care of it." While your Stone Age counterpart was free to fight or flee, you are forced to endure the standoff. Yours is a stress response with no place to go. And, unlike the retreating wolves, you are faced with similar stressors all day, everyday.

Stress and Health
A maladaptive stress response—one that essentially never shuts off—is potentially harmful in two ways:
Continuous or repeated surges of excess stress hormone are detrimental to the cardiovascular and immune systems, potentially increasing your risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer, recurrent infection, and other chronic diseases.
As an outlet to the persistent stress, you are more likely to turn to destructive behaviors such as tobacco abuse, excessive alcohol consumption, and dietary overindulgence.
Ironically, the same stress response that could have saved your life in the Stone Age can kill you today.
So, how do you avoid the damaging effects of prolonged stress? There are two basic approaches: eliminate the stressors or minimize the stress response. Avoiding stress all together seems to be the most obvious and promising strategy. However, this is not a realistic one. Life has been stressful since the Stone Age; there's only so much you can do to avoid it.

Adapting to the Stress
Rather than trying to hide from the inevitable, it makes more sense to moderate the harmful effects of the stress response. There are three basic ways to accomplish this:
Use the stress response. Don't take it lying down! While your stress hormones are up, channel them into productive activities. Exercise is an ideal outlet for excess epinephrine and cortisol. Not only does regular exercise clearly benefit the cardiovascular and immune systems, it also offsets the destructive emotions often associated with the stress response, like anxiety and depression.
Alleviate the stress response. Originally, scientists assumed the stress response was involuntary—entirely out of willful control. Recently, however, researchers have discovered our ability to consciously lower our heart rate and blood pressure, raise our skin temperature, and decrease our muscle tone through meditation and other forms of mind-body interventions. Interestingly, they have also found that stress hormone levels drop during these activities. Yoga and tai chi, which combine meditation with exercise, may be particularly effective at mitigating the stress response.
Avoid the stress response. By reinterpreting the impact of a stressor, it may be possible to avoid or severely restrict a maladaptive stress response. While the stress in your life is very real and unavoidable, you may have an exaggerated conception of its magnitude and meaning. Although it is entirely appropriate to have a major stress response when confronting a pack of wolves, a boss's misinterpretation of facts need not necessarily produce a prolonged surge of stress hormones. A process called cognitive-behavior therapy can train you to think and act in ways that result in more realistic and healthier responses to stress. A cognitive-behavioral therapist will help you accept the fact that life is stressful. You will see that health will come not from avoiding life's inevitable stressors, but by finding the resilience to adapt to its inexorable challenges.

Nine Stress Management Tips

1.Know what stresses you most. Not your co-worker, friend, husband, or wife. YOU!! Get your feelings out. Write them out and describe each situation. Share all bad feelings with a friend or in a journal. Before you can conquer your stresses you must know what is stressing you.

2.Say no. Focus on you own goals, not your spouse's or parents'. You must know yourself, your dreams, and your passions. If asked to chair another group or take on another responsibility, look at your mission statement or goals for the day. If it is does not fit it there say thank you but I just cannot. Saying no is one of the hardest things in life, but will help make you a success in your chosen field.

3.Learn to relax. Work hard but know when to take time off to be with the family, go to the beach, or read a book. Work all day if you must but when you get home play, watch cartoons, or tell your child a story. This allows stress tension to go away and helps you calm the heart's pace and digest food normally, and protect your immune system. Learn to meditate and take deep breaths to calm down.

4. Eat healthy. Eat less junk food and more fruit and vegetables for an amazing overall lowering of stress levels. We can actually lower the amount of the bad stress hormone, Cortisol, by taking vitamins. Take those vitamin pills daily.

5. Keep laughing. Keep a sense of humor. Studies show a good attitude helps lower cancer rates, makes surgery more effective, and keeps a relationship together through hard times.

6. Ask yourself WHY. Why are you doing this? Write down your wants, needs, goals, hopes, and dreams. Does what you are doing now help you get fulfill any of these things? What is your motivation? The more you understand why you doing what you are doing the less stress you will have. If you cannot come up with a good reason, then stop doing it.

7. Stay active. Exercise is a great way to relive tension and gives you a great break from exams. A healthy body makes a happy body. Even a three minute jog is helpful at taking your mind off your pressures. You'll come back with an acute focus and renewed energy.

8. Follow your bliss. Try to know which subjects and type of people you enjoy. Structure your life around activities that you love. Joseph Campbell, a wise philosopher, advises you to follow your bliss. The more you do in life that goes with your own flow, the more passion you'll have for what you do.

9. Organize and Prioritize. Do the worst and hardest tasks first. Keep a to-do list and calendar with you at all times. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
